Karonga District Hospital has not received new Health Surveillance Assistants, following the burning of interview question papers by unknown people at Maghemo Secondary school in the district which interrupted the interviews.

Speaking to KDH administrator Clement Gonthi said due to the scandal of burning interview question papers during walk in interview in the month of May has contributed government’s failure to have interviewee from the district.

Gonthi says as a district currently they do not have any expectation of new recruits by the ministry of health,

“Unfortunately Karonga District Hospital has not benefited from the new recruitment of HAS’s this is because of what happened during interviews of which everyone may be aware but we will try to follow up with the ministry if there can be opportunities of having new recruits like other hospitals in the country.”, explained Gonthi

Commenting on the matter, Malawi Equity Health Network executive director in the country George Jobe has requested the government to find ways of employing new employees for KDH of which the interview failed to be conducted in a peaceful manner as it was in other districts.

He said supporting staffs as HAS’s in hospitals are very imperative especially this time of Covid -19 pandemic when there is demand of dissemination of Covid -19 information to the public.

“During walk –interviews it was very pathetic how these interviews were being conducted government should find good strategy when  conducting such interviews and it would be good that KDH should also benefit from the new recruitments as other districts in  the country have  done”, said Jobe.

Ministry of health public relations officer, Joshua Malango has confirmed that government has already shortlisted new HAS’s for government hospitals and have already started working in their respective districts.
